Cultivating Excellence Through Diversity:

A Teaching Philosophy for Inclusion, Advocacy, and Holistic Flute Pedagogy

As a Black, African, and Indigenous flute professor, soloist, and orchestral flutist, my teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that diversity, equity, inclusion, and advocacy are essential catalysts for artistic and personal growth. I am committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment that nurtures musical proficiency and shapes students into well-rounded flutists who contribute meaningfully to their communities.

1. Celebrating Diversity in Music:

My approach to teaching recognizes and celebrates the rich tapestry of several musical traditions, including, but not limited to Black, African, Indigenous, Eastern, and Western cultures. I believe in inviting students to new musical genres and drawing inspiration from diverse traditions to expand their artistic palette. By doing so, students gain a broader perspective on the flute's versatility and role in various cultural expressions.

2. Individualized Instruction:

Recognizing that each student is unique, I am committed to tailoring my instruction to accommodate each student's learning style and musical interests. Fostering an environment where students feel heard and valued, I aim to inspire them to explore their creative voices while providing the necessary guidance to refine their technical skills.

3. Holistic Development:

Beyond music, my goal is to guide students toward holistic personal growth. I believe in instilling values such as discipline, resilience, integrity, and empathy, which are integral to their success as musicians and contributing members of society. By integrating life skills into the musical curriculum, students will develop a strong foundation for success in all facets of their lives. An educational source I reference in lessons is the book Chop Wood, Carry Water by Joshua Medcalf, which discusses that beauty is found in making mistakes and using those experiences to become and appreciate what greatness entails.

4. Community Engagement:

I emphasize the importance of community engagement and encourage students to use their musical talents to connect with audiences. This could involve collaborating with local communities, participating in outreach programs, performing in small businesses to attract customers, or even using music for social change. By engaging with the world beyond the practice room, students gain a broader understanding of the impact their art can have on society.

5. Creating a Safe and Inclusive Space:

The fundamental aspect of my teaching philosophy is creating a safe and inclusive space where students from all backgrounds feel wanted and important. I am committed to addressing and dismantling systemic barriers that may impede the progress of underrepresented groups in the world of classical music. I aim to empower students to thrive academically and artistically by fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

6. Encouraging Curiosity and Lifelong Learning:

I strive to cultivate a love for learning and a curiosity that extends beyond the classroom. By encouraging students to explore various musical genres, historical periods, and cultural contexts, I hope to instill a lifelong passion for discovery and growth. The flute becomes a tool not only for artistic expression but also for continual exploration and self-discovery. In my teaching, the tools to become a successful entrepreneur and businessperson are essential to a thriving artist. Another book I require my students to read is The Entrepreneurial Muse by Dr. Jeffrey Nytch, Professor of Composition and Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado Boulder.

In summary, my teaching philosophy reflects my commitment to nurturing the next generation of flutists into skilled musicians and compassionate individuals. By embracing diversity, fostering a holistic approach to education, and promoting community engagement, I aim to provide a transformative collegiate experience that transcends musical boundaries and prepares students for success in both their artistic endeavors and personal lives.
